Frequently Asked Questions

Clear guidance for complex FX questions

FX risk management isn’t simple. Here, we answer the questions treasury and finance teams ask most, with practical guidance you can actually use.

About AtlasFX

What is AtlasFX?

AtlasFX is an end-to-end FX risk management platform built by treasury and finance practitioners, for treasury and finance practitioners.

We help multinational companies capture FX exposures straight from their ERP systems, design and run hedging programs, automate the manual work, and produce analytics that actually explain hedge performance.

Consulting is included as standard, and we're headquartered in San Francisco with a European office in Dublin.

What does AtlasFX do?

AtlasFX manages the entire FX risk lifecycle in one place: capturing exposures, forecasting, determining and approving hedges, integrates with trading platforms, and explaining the results.

The platform spans balance sheet hedging, cash flow hedging, ERP exposure capture, FX trading optimization, workflow automation, results analytics, and hedge accounting.

Because consulting comes with it, we act as an extension of your treasury team, not just a software vendor.

Is AtlasFX a software company?

FX risk can't be solved by software alone. You get a platform configured to your specific ERP environment and hedging program, plus direct access to practitioners who help guide policy and strategy decisions.

Who uses AtlasFX?

Corporate treasury and finance teams at multinational companies that manage FX risk across multiple entities, currencies, and ERP systems.

Customers span technology, manufacturing, life sciences, and professional services. A common profile is a treasury team asked to do more with less, one that needs the capability of a much larger function without the headcount.

Who founded AtlasFX?

AtlasFX was founded by corporate FX risk management practitioners who spent their careers inside treasury and finance functions at multinational companies.

That background shapes everything. Rather than build a generic tool and ask customers to bend around it, the founders built a flexible platform around how FX risk is actually managed day to day.

How long has AtlasFX been in business?

AtlasFX has been helping multinational companies manage FX risk for over 15 years.

In that time we've protected customers from billions of dollars in FX volatility and saved millions in unnecessary trading costs, across a wide range of industries, ERP environments, and hedging strategies. That experience is reflected in industry recognition including the EuroFinance, Adam Smith, Alexander Hamilton, and TMI awards.

Where is AtlasFX headquartered?

AtlasFX is headquartered at 38 Keyes Avenue, Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94129.

We also keep a European office at Innovation Quarter, Belgard Square North, Tallaght, Dublin 24, D24 E1TT, Ireland to support EMEA customers. You can reach us at info@atlasfx.com or +1 (844) 392-8527.

Is AtlasFX the same as Atlas Copco, Atlas Financial, or other Atlas-named companies?

No. AtlasFX, full name Atlas Risk Advisory, is an independent company with no affiliation to Atlas Copco, Atlas Financial, AtlasRTX, or any other Atlas-named organization.

We focus exclusively on corporate foreign exchange risk management technology and consulting.

FX risk management basics

What is FX risk management software?

FX risk management software helps treasury teams identify, measure, hedge, and analyze the foreign exchange exposures that come from foreign currency assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses.

The goal is simple: reduce earnings volatility, improve visibility, and give the business real control over its FX risk.

Why do companies need FX risk management software?

Any company operating in more than one currency is exposed to exchange rate swings that can quietly move earnings.

Good FX software automates the parts that eat treasury's time: collecting exposures, determining hedge requirements, running the approval workflow, and measuring whether the hedges actually worked. That frees the team to manage the risk instead of chasing the data.

What causes FX earnings volatility?

It usually traces back to three things: the remeasurement or revaluation of foreign currency balance sheet items, cash flows that were never hedged, and gaps between what was forecast and what actually happened.

AtlasFX is built to surface each of these and show exactly where the volatility is coming from.

What are the main types of FX exposure?

There are three that treasury teams deal with most:

  • Balance sheet exposure
  • Cash flow exposure
  • Translation exposure

How do multinational companies manage FX risk?

Most use a mix of treasury policy, exposure reporting, hedging programs, hedge accounting, and analytical reporting.

The problem is that these usually live in separate tools and spreadsheets. AtlasFX brings the whole workflow into one connected platform so nothing falls through the cracks.

How AtlasFX compares

Is AtlasFX a TMS (Treasury Management System)?

No, and the two really aren't comparable on FX depth. A TMS treats FX as one module among many and focuses on back-end tasks like cash management and bank settlements.

AtlasFX covers the full FX lifecycle, from ERP exposure capture through hedging strategy, execution, results analytics, and accounting, with consulting included.

Can AtlasFX work alongside an existing TMS?

Yes. Plenty of customers keep their TMS and run AtlasFX beside it for dedicated FX capability.

AtlasFX integrates with TMS platforms and pulls in trade and hedge gain and loss data, while handling the specialized FX work the TMS wasn't built for.

How is AtlasFX different from other treasury solution providers?

Most competitors make you adapt to their fixed way of doing things. AtlasFX was built by FX practitioners who know no two companies manage FX risk the same way.

So the platform is configured to your ERP environment, your hedging policy, and your workflow. We do the up-front configuration work others won't, and consulting is included as standard rather than sold separately.

Does AtlasFX replace spreadsheets?

Not the tool itself. AtlasFX integrates with Excel, so your team keeps working in the tool they already know. What we replace is running your full FX program and workflows inside a spreadsheet someone built a year ago, pulling ERP reports, reconciling exposures, and building hedge documentation by hand.

AtlasFX automates that whole cycle, exposure capture, netting, trade workflow, and reporting, which removes the spreadsheet risk and hands senior treasury time back.

What should treasury teams look for when selecting FX risk management software?

A few criteria separate a real FX platform from a partial one:

  • ERP integration and exposure reporting quality
  • Forecasting functionality
  • Workflow and approval controls
  • Execution connectivity
  • Reporting and analytics that explain results
  • Configurability to your process
  • Support model and treasury expertise
  • End-to-end lifecycle coverage

ERP exposure management

Why is ERP exposure data important?

Every hedging decision is only as good as the exposure data underneath it. Incomplete or incorrect data leads to under-hedging, over-hedging, and month-end volatility.

That's why AtlasFX starts at the source and gets the exposure data right before a single hedge is placed.

What ERPs does AtlasFX integrate with?

AtlasFX integrates with all the major ERP platforms, including SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and NetSuite.

For companies running several ERPs, common after years of acquisitions, we use hybrid models that combine direct API connections with other extraction methods and consolidate everything into one workflow.

We have a messy ERP environment from years of acquisitions. Can AtlasFX help?

Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons companies come to us in the first place.

We pull directly from the ERP instances that make sense, supplement the rest through other methods, and consolidate it all into a single source of truth. We've done this for customers running dozens of ERP instances across multiple business units.

What are ghost balances?

A ghost balance happens when the functional currency balance of an account reads zero but a transaction currency balance is still sitting there.

Left alone, they quietly distort exposure reporting and FX analytics. AtlasFX is designed to catch them before they skew your numbers.

Does AtlasFX capture income statement activity?

Yes. AtlasFX exposure reporting covers both balance sheet exposures and income statement activity in transaction currency.

That fuller picture shows what's really driving your FX exposures and how they're likely to move.

Balance sheet hedging

What is balance sheet hedging?

Balance sheet hedging is the practice of hedging foreign currency-denominated monetary assets and liabilities to reduce the FX gains and losses that flow through earnings.

Does AtlasFX support balance sheet hedging?

Yes, with a dedicated balance sheet hedging module.

It brings exposure reporting, forecasting, workflow, execution, and analytics together in one place instead of scattered across tools.

Can AtlasFX forecast balance sheet exposures?

Yes. AtlasFX supports forecasting for month-end.

That lets treasury anticipate where balance sheet positions are heading and hedge them more effectively.

Can AtlasFX create trade recommendations?

Yes. AtlasFX applies your configured hedge policy to calculate hedge requirements, factor in existing positions, and generate trade recommendations.

It's built around your policy rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Does AtlasFX support trade approval workflows?

Yes. AtlasFX includes review, approval, and audit workflows for both trade recommendations and execution, with a complete audit trail behind every step.

Does AtlasFX support trade rollover management?

Yes. AtlasFX generates and manages rollover transactions for maturing hedge positions automatically, so nothing gets missed at rollover.

Cash flow hedging and forecasting

What is cash flow hedging?

Cash flow hedging means hedging forecasted future transactions, such as revenues, expenses, and forecast purchases, to take the uncertainty out of FX.

Does AtlasFX support cash flow hedging?

Yes, with a dedicated cash flow hedging module covering forecasting, workflow, analytics, and reporting.

How does AtlasFX improve forecast accuracy?

Two ways. First, it captures exposure data directly from source ERP systems instead of relying on manual estimates.

Second, our FX Forecast Improvement service pinpoints the specific drivers of forecast error in your business and builds workflows to correct them. AtlasFX AI adds a machine-learning layer that has reduced FX forecast errors by more than 50% for customers.

Does AtlasFX store forecast versions?

Yes. AtlasFX keeps every forecast iteration.

That means teams can compare versions, see exactly what changed, spot forecast bias, and measure accuracy over time, which turns forecasting into something you can actually improve.

Does AtlasFX use AI?

Yes. AtlasFX AI runs throughout the platform, across exposure capture, hedging workflow, and results analysis.

It blends internal data, external signals, and machine-learning models to sharpen forecasts, surface variance, and cut hours of manual work. In practice that means smarter hedging decisions and stronger controls, with forecast error reduced by more than 50%.

Analytics and results

What makes AtlasFX analytics different?

Most tools stop at reporting the numbers. AtlasFX explains them.

The platform breaks down the sources of variance and hedge performance so you can tell leadership what happened and why, with confidence.

How does AtlasFX explain month-end FX results?

AtlasFX compares your ERP remeasurement or revaluation results against hedge gains and losses and the exposure movements during the month.

It then sorts the variance into clear, identifiable sources, so the month-end conversation with the CFO, controllers, and audit committee is grounded in facts rather than guesswork.

What sources of variance can AtlasFX identify?

AtlasFX separates variance into the drivers that actually explain your results:

  • Forward points
  • Unhedged exposure
  • Spot slippage
  • Forecast deviations
  • Booking errors

Can AtlasFX help treasury explain FX results to FP&A and leadership?

Yes, and this is one of the places AtlasFX earns its keep.

Because the platform covers both the income statement and the balance sheet and retains forecasts against actuals, treasury can show FP&A and leadership where FX moved the numbers and why. That shared, drill-down view helps close the gap between treasury and FP&A.

Can AtlasFX provide drill-down reporting?

Yes. You can analyze results by entity, company code, currency pair, and GL account.

That level of detail is what you need when you're chasing down an unexpected movement.

Does AtlasFX support what-if analysis?

Yes. AtlasFX supports scenario and what-if reporting, so you can test outcomes before you commit to a hedge.

Does AtlasFX support constant currency reporting?

Yes. AtlasFX includes reporting that analyzes results on a constant currency basis, which is useful when you need to separate real performance from FX movement.

Execution, trading, and controls

What types of FX hedges does AtlasFX support?

AtlasFX supports FX forwards, options, and other derivative instruments used in corporate hedging programs.

For each instrument it handles the trade workflow, hedge designation, effectiveness testing, and accounting treatment.

How does AtlasFX help reduce FX trading costs?

Through better exposure visibility, smarter netting, and sharper trade timing and counterparty selection.

When you net intercompany flows before hedging externally, you cut the notional you actually have to trade, which cuts cost directly. BankMinder then helps you keep execution competitive across your banking panel.

Can AtlasFX connect to execution platforms?

Yes. AtlasFX integrates with execution venues including Bloomberg FXGO, FXall, and 360T.

Does AtlasFX support post-trade validation?

Yes. AtlasFX compares executed trades against your target hedge positions as an added control point, so execution errors surface immediately.

Can AtlasFX generate internal trades?

Yes. AtlasFX supports the creation of internal trades and internal trade reporting.

What is BankMinder?

BankMinder is the AtlasFX transaction cost analysis and execution optimization module.

It shows treasury how their banks are actually pricing and executing FX, giving you hard data for more informed conversations with counterparties.

Can AtlasFX help with intercompany netting?

Yes. AtlasFX folds intercompany netting into the FX hedging workflow, which improves efficiency and cuts operational risk.

Accounting, compliance, and security

Does AtlasFX support hedge accounting under ASC 815 or IFRS 9?

Yes. AtlasFX includes a dedicated FX Accounting module supporting hedge accounting under both ASC 815 (US GAAP) and IFRS 9.

It automates hedge designation, effectiveness documentation, and journal entry preparation, which takes a real bite out of the quarterly workload for treasury and accounting.

Is AtlasFX audit-ready?

Yes. The platform produces audit-ready documentation for every piece of hedging activity, from exposure records to hedge designations and effectiveness tests.

Because everything traces back to source ERP records, auditors get a clean chain of custody from exposure through execution and accounting, no fragile spreadsheet trail.

How does AtlasFX handle data security?

Security and compliance are built into every layer of the platform, with encrypted data transmission, access controls, and secure hosting.

AtlasFX is independently certified to SOC 1 Type II and ISO standards. For specifics on data residency and regional requirements, we're happy to walk your team through the details, and full security documentation is available under NDA.

Getting started and pricing

How long does implementation take?

Most clients are up and running within 4 to 12 weeks, depending on ERP complexity and program scope.

Our team handles the customization and implementation, guiding you from kickoff through go-live. You won't need an additional deployment or implementation team to get AtlasFX up and running. Support continues after that at no extra charge.

We don't have a hedging program yet. Can AtlasFX build one?

Yes. AtlasFX can design, implement, and operationalize a hedging program from scratch, set up correctly and built to scale.

We establish your FX policy, train your team on best practices, and build a repeatable hedging and analytics cadence. For lean teams especially, AtlasFX becomes an extended team member that keeps things running through staff turnover.

How much does AtlasFX cost?

AtlasFX is priced modularly, so you only pay for the capabilities your team actually uses.

Most clients find the platform cost-neutral or better within the first year once they account for reduced FX volatility, eliminated trading inefficiencies, and the manual hours they get back. Reach out to info@atlasfx.com for a quote scoped to your program.
